Solide is a work of 136 objects in the shape of lenses around the building Solid 1C designed by Inbo Architects and Stadgenoot Amsterdam. It is positioned on a man-made island in Amsterdam called IJburg. Solide represents a study of the different streams of sand that have converged at the site of Solid 1C from the Holocene (about 11,000 years ago) to the present.
Solide is a legend that zooms in on the colors and texture of the layers of sand related to the building. The set slowly changes color, responding to the four wind directions and time zones: The Holocene, the formation of IJburg, the formation of concrete in the building, and the Sahara sand as dust in the air.
The work is a result of first collecting and combining different sorts of data about these different layers of sand, followed by a translation into colors, textures and silhouettes. The total set is positioned on the grid of the building. Each of the lenses is unique and hand-painted in enamel.
